Ingredients (large-bt)


500 gms – moong dal, washed and soaked for 20 minutes 

½ tsp – turmeric powder 

1 tbsp – oil 

1 tsp – mustard seeds 

A pinch asafoetida 

2 tsp – ginger – garlic paste 

1 nos. – tomato, finely chopped 

½ tsp – cumin powder 

½ tsp – coriander powder 

½ tsp – red chilli powder 

2 tsp jiggery, grated 

To taste salt


Method (large-bt)


1) In a glass bowl, combine the moong dal with 800 ml of water and turmeric powder and microwave on high power for 20 minutes, stirring and pausing after every 5 minutes. More water may be added if required, but care should be taken not to add too much water as the dal should be very thick.


2) In another glass bowl, combine the oil and mustard seeds and microwave on medium power for 5 seconds. When mustard splutters, mix in the ginger – garlic paste, chopped tomato, cumin powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder.


3) Microwave on high power for 3 minutes. Mix in the cooked dal and jiggery with 50 ml water and microwave for another 10 minutes, pausing stirring after every 5 minutes. Mix in salt.


4) Leave to stand for 5 minutes before serving.
